You know, that just might work
Followup to my previous post o' frustrations...

There's a cosplay.com user, Yui, who makes seriously rad shit out of some sort of durable, flexible foam. I've seen more rad shit from Japan made from similar foam. Well, in my frustration and time crunch, I looked through their posts to try to figure out what the foam was. And I did. It's closed-cell foam commonly used as pipe insulation. Evidently you can buy it at the hardware store and shape it in various ways (like by getting it to stay bent and then coating it with wood glue). I'm going to go get some this week and put it to work.

Oh, I will! I forgot to mention that another good source of this material is camping pads (which are pretty cheap - according to Google, they go for $8-15). You can get a smooth, shiny look by gluing vinyl over the foam (as shown here). I'm not sure if I'll try that (it's one of those things that you have only one chance to get right or you need to start all over, and that annoys me...plus, Yui paints right on her foam, and it looks great to me), but I'm all excited about the possibility of getting all of the armor finished in a very cleanly done way.
