Beauty! Such elegance!
Time required to construct costume (including screw-ups): 100 hours
Time required to wrangle 2 1/2 feet of hair under a wig once we knew what to do: 2 hours
Time in costume: 6 hours
Having fangirls cry and hug you because you hammed it up while dressed as a favorite character who is rarely cosplayed: so hella worth it.

I will post more about my fabulous Otakon experience later. For now, here is a link to my brand new cosplay.com album for photos of my complete (enough to wear and look cohesive) Zhang He. Aside from the various discomfort associated with platform boots and a heavy, tight wig, I had an absolute blast in the costume.

I will post more pictures as I find them. Eurobeat King took a handful, and so did some other cosplay photographers who gave me cards with their website URL's. I wore some basic makeup (including sheer foundation) and had a decent idea of how to pose (thanks to a few years of karate training), and the various parts of the costume behaved themselves well, so I think I generally presented myself well, even if you don't count all the corny lines I spouted in my lower vocal register. =P

I feel pretty...oh so pretty...I feel pretty...and witty...and GAY!

Thanks! I felt awesome too! ^_________^ I just located and added more pictures to the gallery.

You look splendiferous! I was disappointed that the Fansview guy didn't catch you, so you'll have to post more photos as you find them.

Thanks! I've never actually seen the Fansview guy, weirdly enough. I was bummed out that he didn't get me, either, because he's probably the fastest to post photos and I get impatient. I have found more and posted them in the gallery, though!

The wrath of the armchair cosplayers
Ha... I was just heading over here to let you know you made it on cosplayfucks when I noticed you replied to the thread there.

Can't wait to see some Zhang He shots that show off the wig some more.

Re: The wrath of the armchair cosplayers
Yep...I read that community as well, and when I saw the animated sprite, I guessed I was probably in there. I really don't mind, though. The snark is fair, and it reminds me of how far I've come from my "ZOMG Felicia roolz I wanna make a costuem!111!!" days. Besides, one of my axioms has long been "If you put something on the internets, someone somewhere will rip on it, so you better keep it private if you're going to go bawl in your beer over snerk", so it's not exactly a surprise. ^_^

Out of curiosity, how did you come across cosplayfucks? Somebody advertised it in the cosplay community a while ago (and it got BALEETED but not before I saw it), and I've been randomly stopping back ever since because it amuses me.

I can't wait to post more pics, too! Until then, here are several views of the wig showing the ponytail (though it doesn't sit the same way because it's on a mannequin, not a regular head of hair). I unfortunately couldn't wear the butterfly accessory because the top of the wig was just way too tight for me to squeeze the attached combs through. Hopefully I can poke it in there next time I wear the wig. (I plan to go to a salon to get multiple alternating horizontal French braids, which will lay quite flat and can be left in place for several days. I would carefully shampoo my scalp by patting it. I've done it before when I had braids in for 2+ weeks, and it was easy and it worked.)

Re: The wrath of the armchair cosplayers
I was on a hunt for Otakon pics and ended up coming across it.

Re: The wrath of the armchair cosplayers
I just posted some more, including one that shows the ponytail. It's not quite as illustrative as the composite on Petting Zoo Wigs' site, but you can see that it sticks out and has a wrapped decoration at the bottom.

Re: The wrath of the armchair cosplayers
Very cool! These new shots also show just how ginormous those claws are. Holy crap.
The Heavy Metal Matador: South Park - Happyrydain on August 24th, 2005 02:46 pm (UTC)
Re: The wrath of the armchair cosplayers
Thanks! The claws are 2' strips of basswood from the craft store. Each set of four is superglued to sturdy 3" wide strapping that gets Velcroed to the underside of the back of hand piece of the arm guards. This wound up working very well. It's good to be able to break down awkward props (or replace a broken peripheral without having to redo the entire damned thing).

You, dahling, look faaaabulous. =)

Absolutely fabulous :-) I could never make such an amazing costume :)
The Heavy Metal Matador: South Park - Happyrydain on August 24th, 2005 04:11 am (UTC)
Thank you! Actually, you'd be surprised at what you can do given enough patience, time, and elbow grease (and money also helps). I never thought I'd be able to make a hyoooge prop sword, but there's one sitting under my couch. I did have help with the fiberglassing, but I did everything else myself (cutting/shaping the blade, finishing the bare spots, priming and painting it).
The Heavy Metal Matador: South Park - Happyrydain on August 24th, 2005 04:09 am (UTC)
Thanks! I grabbed it and put it in my gallery along with another new pic. The photographer put that one on the dynastywarriors community, too, and somebody in the associated thread couldn't tell my gender. Was I flattered. Nobody in person was fooled because I have a very obviously female face and a standard female hip/waist ratio (and Zeriel says you can still see my boobs even though the unitard did flatten me out), but that particular pose hides my hips, and it seems that my face photographed in an androgynous way. At any rate, me happy.

You saw meeeeeeeee at otakon.

Add me, woman. ^_^
