Day 9: Saddest game scene
Time to show my age. My vote for saddest game scene doesn't go to any of the usual suspects.

Crystalis is an action/adventure game set in a postapocalyptic world. Early on, it shows a darker tone than we typically saw in the 8-bit era. If you speak to a certain traveler at an inn, he'll get all excited and run off into the mountains. Later on, you come across that same man on the verge of death.

Your travels take you to the town of Shyron - a holdout against the game's Evil Empire of Draygon - where you reconnect with various familiar characters. The music provides a certain degree of foreshadowing, I suppose, but I didn't see it at the time.

Plot happens. Shyron is under attack. You return to find the entire town dead.

I don't have a screenshot, and it doesn't look very impressive by modern standards. OH NOES PIXEL PEOPLE LYING EVERYWHERE WHOOPITY FRICKING DO. At the time? It was a hell of a shock. On replays, I got in the habit of not talking to any of the injured, as they didn't actually die and disappear until spoken to. Thus I could pretend that the entire place was healed back to its glory after I beat the game.

The whole game was rather sad. I mean, you save the world, I suppose, but it's not really in great shape by that point. Still, one of my favorite 8-bit games.
